Where Hilma would send you

  1. 1 Kenroku-en Garden Landmark Sep 11
    Kenroku-en Garden

One of Japan's three great gardens β€” the Maeda clan spent four generations perfecting it from the 1620s. The Kasumi-ga-ike pond with its two-legged stone lantern is the single most composed view in the city. Come early before the tour buses, or at night during the autumn illuminations (Sep 19–22, free).

A circular glass building by SANAA (the Pritzker-winning architects). The permanent installation β€” Leandro Erlich's 'Swimming Pool' you can walk under β€” is worth the trip alone. Current: Hitoshi Ushijima & Hiraki Sawa (Sep 8 onward) and the Collection Exhibition 'Walking, Staying' through Oct 18. Open late Fridays and Saturdays until 20:00.

  3. 3 Omicho Market Attraction Sep 11
    Omicho Market

Three hundred years of covered market β€” fishmongers, pickle stalls, sushi counters, and the best place to eat kaisendon (raw seafood over rice) for breakfast. Grab a bowl of fresh crab or amaebi and wander the arcade. Less touristy than Tsukiji, just as alive.

  4. 4 Hakuichi Higashiyama Store (Gold Leaf Workshop) Shop Sep 11

The city that makes 99% of Japan's gold leaf β€” and here you can apply it yourself. Paint a lacquer box, a mirror frame, or a pair of earrings, then eat gold-leaf soft-serve ice cream afterward. Messy, delightful, very Kanazawa.

A traditional Shinto procession visiting the city's main shrines β€” a completely local, non-touristy piece of living culture. September 13. If you are in town that day, follow the crowd in white robes.

Multiple shrines, Kanazawa city centre, Japan
  6. 6 Kanazawa Jazz Street Event Sep 11

Free street-corner jazz across the city centre plus paid hall concerts. Four days of brass and sax drifting through the chaya district alleys β€” exactly the atmosphere that makes a city feel like a city.

Various venues, Kanazawa city centre, Japan

Kenroku-en and Kanazawa Castle Park lit up at night for four evenings β€” free entry, 18:00–20:45. The maples and the castle turret reflected in the pond under paper-lantern light. This is the single best thing happening in Kanazawa in late September.

  8. 8 Kanazawa Odori Event Sep 11
    Kanazawa Odori
    Sep 19 – Sep 20 ended

The annual Kaga geisha dance performance β€” the local version of Kyoto's Miyako Odori. Two shows daily (13:00, 16:00) at Ishikawa Ongakudo Hall. Geiko trained in the Higashi Chaya district performing classical dance in full regalia. Book ahead if this weekend aligns with your visit.

    20-1 Showa-machi, Kanazawa, Ishikawa 920-0856, Japan
