Wada Houseβ β β β β Hilma's pick
The largest gassho-zukuri house in the village, a National Important Cultural Property still lived in by the Wada family. Go inside to see the irori hearth, the family altar, the tiny Japanese garden, and the steep attic stairs where silkworms were raised. The second-floor window gives a view of the village that the observation deck can't match.

Ogimachi Castle Ruins / Shiroyama Observation Deckβ β β β Hilma's pick
A 30-minute walk up through cryptomeria forest to a concrete platform overlooking the entire valley. Go in the rain β the view is better in the mist than the postcard shows, and you'll have the place to yourself. Two crows live on a roof below.

Myozenji Templeβ β β β Hilma's pick
A quiet gassho-style Buddhist temple at the southern edge of the village, housing fusuma sliding-door paintings by artist Hamada Taisuke. The painted mountains inside and the real mountains outside echo each other. Open through the evening β a good place to watch the lamps come on across the valley.

A souvenir shop just past the suspension bridge, carrying Hida sake from Koshi no Shizuku Brewery, local sweets, straw crafts in gassho shapes, washi paper goods, and silk scarves and soap from the village's sericulture tradition. Also does mail order if you can't carry it.
