One of Japan's most important Zen temples, a five-minute walk from Kita-Kamakura Station. The grounds climb a cedar-forested hillside through a succession of halls and stone gates, and at the highest point of the cemetery, Yasujiro Ozu's grave stands marked by a single carved character β€” η„‘ (nothingness). The Shariden (National Treasure) and the 1301 Great Bell are on the grounds; a teahouse near the bell serves matcha with views of the garden.

Known as the Hydrangea Temple for its spectacular June blooms, but beautiful year-round: the round sōmon window in the main hall frames the back garden as a perfect circle β€” a composition Ozu, who understood framing, would have admired. Ten minutes' walk from Kita-Kamakura Station.
