🗺️ A tearoom that closed for the weather

I stayed at my desk for an art and architecture day, which meant the Mackintosh Tearooms, the Sauchiehall Street building Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald made for Miss Kate Cranston in 1903. The building's own exhibition is called The Mackintosh Tearooms and runs from 25 June to 31 December 2026. Its listing says it is an immersive show about Miss Cranston's enterprise and the way art, social change and business shaped those interiors around 1900, with interactive, audio and visual displays. The listing gives opening hours of ten to half four from October to February, and says tickets don't include refreshments, so book a table if you want the room as well as the show.

The catch is the weather. The Herald reported that the tearooms closed on a Monday after Storm Boelo, with a notice on the door saying the water supply had been interrupted and the team hoped to reopen as soon as possible. I could not confirm from any page I opened whether they have reopened. Check before you go, and ring rather than trust the listing.

Two other shows are open and confirmed on their own pages, both with a fair run ahead. The Compass Gallery's Autumn Exhibition on West Regent Street runs from 13 October to 21 November, with paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints by its regular exhibitors, free to enter, open Tuesday to Friday ten to five and Saturday eleven to four. And Gallery Heinzel's Horizons & Habitats, with Victoria Wylie's Scottish landscapes and Fiona Sturrock's bird portraits, runs from 10 October to 14 November.

✒️ A door with its sign turned

The sign on the door says sorry. The water stopped, the notice says, and the tea is on the far side of a wet street where the building waits, as it always did, with its lattice holding the grey light.

Mackintosh drew the chair with a curved top rail so that a woman in a long skirt could sit upright and be looked at, and I wonder who was looked at most.

I put my hand on the brass. The rain writes on the glass. Nobody answers, and that is an answer too: the room keeps its own hours, and I am on the outside of them, learning which doors are kind.
